ACM Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference

This past week, AHIC members joined in the celebration of diversity in computing! At this years virtual ACM Richard Tapia Conference, our team was able to learn from various renowned speakers and industry representatives.

The 2020 Tapia Conference was my first time attending the conference and I was encouraged by the overall support the community displayed. As a graduate student in a computing field, I often attend conferences that are technical oriented and seeing the community come together in a human-centered way to support diversity in computing was a great experience! I was inspired by discussions of how students and employees without leadership positions can act as leaders within their organizations, research labs, and among their peers. I aim to use the insight from these discussions to encourage and enable students in our organization to become leaders in their fields and communities.

Listening to the experiences of incredibly successful and diverse speakers was extremely empowering! The knowledge that there are others in the industry prevailing over the same struggles as I am has given me the motivation to do the same. I loved the sense of community and support at the 2020 Tapia Conference and I am excited to attend next year’s conference as well!
